Intelligent Risk

Evolving Governance from Defence to Foresight to Resilience

Uncertainty cannot be eliminated. But organisations can become better at navigating it.

Most organisations have governance. They have risk frameworks, controls, assurance processes, reporting structures and plans for when things go wrong. Yet organisations with all of these things can still be surprised.

The problem is not necessarily that governance has failed. It may be that we have asked governance to do too little.

Intelligent Risk challenges the conventional view of risk as something primarily to be identified, assessed, controlled and reported. It asks a broader question: How does an organisation become better at recognising, interpreting and responding to uncertainty before the consequences become obvious?

The book develops this idea through three interconnected concepts.

The Three Lines of Defence provide the foundations of accountability, challenge and independent assurance. They help organisations protect what matters and maintain confidence in how risks are being managed.

The Cycle of Curiosity looks outward. It explores how organisations can actively search for change, question assumptions, connect fragmented information and recognise signals that conventional governance processes may overlook.

The Architecture of Integration brings these capabilities together, connecting governance, intelligence, learning and organisational capability so that insight can influence decisions and experience can strengthen what happens next.

Together, they shift the conversation from simply managing known risks towards developing an organisation capable of thinking intelligently about uncertainty.

This is not a book about predicting the future. Nor is it an argument for more governance, more controls or more reporting.

It is about building organisations that are more curious before decisions are made, more thoughtful when uncertainty is present, and more capable of adapting when circumstances change.

Who is it for?

Intelligent Risk is written for leaders, executives, directors, governance and risk professionals, project and program leaders, and anyone interested in how organisations make consequential decisions when the path ahead is unclear.

You do not need to be a risk specialist.

You simply need to be willing to ask whether the way organisations currently think about risk is enough.

The aim is not certainty. It is better judgement in its absence.
